Tribute to Lahaina

History of Lahaina-

The town of Lahaina is both rich in culture and history. In 1802, King Kamehameha named Lahaina the capital of the entire Hawaiian Kingdom. For over 50 years it served as the center and home for the Hawaiian government and royal family. In 1831, Lahainaluna High School opened - being deemed as one of the oldest schools West of the Rocky Mountains. Even through this year- it remained one of the only public schools that provide room and board in the entire country. The famous Baldwin family built their home on Front St. in 1834 - often referred to as the "missionary compound". In 1963 it was converted into a monument and public museum available for touring. In 1940- the prominent Lahaina Lighthouse was built 9ft tall - making it the oldest lighthouse in the Pacific and the first ever lit navigation tour in Hawaii. In 1873 the celebrated Banyan tree (currently 60 ft. tall) was planted in the center of the city - marking the spot in which a ceremony was hosted to mark Hawaii becoming a US territory in 1898.

Burning of Lahaina-

August 8, 2023, the most devastating blazes of fire burned through 2,170 acres of open land, residential houses, local businesses, commercial buildings, historic monuments, churches and so much more. Leaving residents, Native Hawaiians, and the entire world at a loss for words. Many lives were taken in the mix and many locals lost everything. Amongst the tragedy - hundreds of people pulled together to physically donate food, clothes, supplies, time and money in an effort to show love and support whether near or far. The Lahaina community is still searching for missing loved ones, creating a new sense of normal and an action plan to rebuild and gain back all that has been lost.
